Executive Director

Location: Detroit, Michigan

Hours Per Week: 25-40

The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing and managing the everyday programs and operations of the CCAA while also planning for and assuring its future. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors.

Specifically, the Executive Director will:

  • Work with staff to develop and execute the organization’s operations, programs, and special projects. Oversee all programming in support of the CCAA’s mission.

  • Develop and oversee an annual operating budget, as well as project and staff budgets.

  • Be willing and able to cultivate and solicit prospective donors and philanthropic support.

  • Lead CCAA grantmaking and fundraising efforts.

  • Represent the organization in the community, and at regional and national events.

  • Fulfill HR functions with the consent and advisement of the Board of Directors.

In advance of the CCAA’s assumption of new premises:

  • The Executive Director will focus their efforts on grantmaking, fundraising, and program design in anticipation of implementing full and robust programming in early 2018.

  • The Executive Director will be the liaison between the CCAA and the Developer and construction manager of our new facility. The ED will oversee the planning, construction, equipment donations and purchases, and installation of fixtures in the education studios and exhibition space.

  • While this is a fulltime position, the executive director may make their own schedule, electing to work 25-40 hours per week until the organization has other staff to manage, or moves into its new location in early 2018.

  • Base pay will increase as the position’s workload increases until the Executive Director is working full-time, managing staff in the new facility.      

QUALIFICATIONS:

The CCCAA is seeking an energetic and entrepreneurial Executive Director with a solid art, humanities, or education background and a passion for craft and creative production. The successful candidate must be able to articulate a strategic vision for the organization and must possess strong skills in communication, management, program development, and fundraising. The candidate should also be familiar with education pedagogy, exhibition management, and art-based public programming.

Specific requirements include:

• M.F.A. or M.A. in art or a related field (M.B.A. or M.S. acceptable with demonstrated related experience). Progressively responsible experience as a curator and/or administrator of a Museum or comparable not-for-profit art organization.

• Academic credentials and/or work experience that demonstrates familiarity with craft, art, material culture, etc.

• An established record of excellence in previous positions and accomplishments.

• Demonstrated experience managing both budgets and operations; familiarity with basic accounting principles and ability to navigate financial statements.

• A record of success in securing competitive grants and in raising funds from individuals.

• Ability to be a compelling, energetic and enthusiastic spokesperson, capable of articulating the mission and goals of the Center for Craft & Applied Arts to diverse audiences.

• Effective mentor of staff.

• Familiarity with best practice standards governing exhibitions, youth programming, workforce development, and facilities management.
