In this small, hands-on class, learn the basics of screen printing by creating a multi-layered portrait of yourself or someone you know. Using computer-free methods, we will create multi-colored background layers and then print a computer-generated half-toned portrait photograph over it, similar in style to the portraits that Andy Warhol became famous for. You will be asked to email your photograph one week in advance of the class.

Techniques covered in this class include:

  • ●  Preparing both handmade and computer-generated artwork for screen printing

  • ●  Coating and exposing screens

  • ●  Setting up for flatstock (paper) screen printing

  • ●  Printing with water-based ink

  • ●  The “split fountain” screen printing technique (gradient/blended colors)

  • ●  Using paper and rubylith to create simple screen stencils

  • ●  Screen printing half-toned images

Ten sheets of 12.5” x 19” paper and all other materials are provided.

Please note that due to the nature of screen printing, we will be standing for much of the class.

This class meets Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29, 10am to 3pm at Ocelot Print Shop:
    3535 Cass Ave
    Detroit, MI 48201

The print shop and its entrance is in the back of the building. There is a free parking lot off of Brainard St.
