Please join us for a panel discussion on seating design, Cranbrook’s history, and the future of chair design.

The discussion will feature four distinguished voices in contemporary design; Scott Klinker, Iris Eichenberg, Brian Kritzman and Von Robinson. The conversation will be moderated by Joe Parr (3D Design '19).

SCOTT KLINKER is the Designer-in-Residence in the 3D Design Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Klinker has a B.S. in industrial design and an M.F.A. from Cranbrook; he has worked as a design consultant and educator with design-driven companies including Herman Miller, Alessi, Steelcase, Burton Snowboards, and others. His work has been featured in ID Magazine, Metropolis, Wallpaper, Interior Design Magazine, The New York Times, Fortune Magazine and Newsweek.

IRIS EICHENBERG is the Artist-in-Residence in the Metalsmithing Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Eichenberg has an extensive exhibition record and her work can be found in various museums including The Cooper-Hewitt (New York), The Museum of Arts and Design (New York), The Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), the Schmuck Museum Pforzheim, among many others.

BRIAN KRITZMAN is a Professor in Industrial Design at Wayne State University. He has an M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art and his work has been recognized and published by I.D. Magazine, Interiors, and Metropolitan Home; as well as the books Architecture and Design 1970 to 1990 New Ideas in America, Cranbrook Design The New Discourse and Product Design 6.

VON ROBINSON is an Associate Professor at the College for Creative Studies with a B.F.A. from Parsons. Robinson was a Principal Designer at Steelcase and has been the recipient of several awards, including Metropolis Magazine’s 10 up-and-coming design firms; The Best Italian Design Products award for the Clarke Lounge Chair; The International Design Yearbook for the Play Orbiter; and co-recipient of the International Packaging Design Award for Prescriptive Cosmetics.

This exhibition features original chairs, designed and built by current MFA and MArch candidates at Cranbrook Academy of Art, and also highlights the history of the exhibition at the Academy. The chairs are on display at 1301 Broadway, a storefront in downtown Detroit.

Cranbrook Academy of Art has a long history of producing artists, designers and architects that influence contemporary culture. To highlight their contributions, there is a digital display featuring past and present chair designs by Academy alumni.

The exhibition is organized, designed and built by current Cranbrook Academy of Art Students Joe Parr (3D Design ’19), Joseph Shedd (3D Design ’19), and Gerald Flynt (2D Design ’19).

This exhibition has been generously supported by Bedrock and Quicken Loans in the Community.
